Headshot of a man

Living With Type 1 Diabetes Without Insurance

Provided by: John*

My name is John*. I am 52 years old and I have been a type 1 diabetic since September of 1976. Currently I am on an insulin pump and have recently acquired insurance. Prior to this I was without insurance for a decade.

I’ve attempted to gain insurance through the state of Michigan but was consistently denied due to the fact that I have always worked. I am who you would term “the working class poor.” As such I was made to feel as though my life was not important enough to warrant healthcare. I didn’t matter. I didn’t matter.

Through no fault of my own do I have type 1 diabetes and my life should not matter less because I lack the means necessary.

Without assistance offered through MCAC and Prescription Assistance I do not know what would have happened to me — no one should have to be in fear of dying simply due to the fact that the medication needed per month is too expensive.

Please allow the help provided by this entity to continue. Not only have they saved my life but countless lives throughout our surrounding community.
