Because No One Should Have to Choose Between Food and Medicine

For many people, the hardest healthcare decisions don’t happen in a doctor’s office. They happen at the kitchen table—when rent, groceries, and prescriptions all compete for the same limited dollars.

That reality is exactly why the Medical Care Access Coalition (MCAC) exists.

Serving residents throughout Dickinson and Iron Counties, MCAC helps individuals navigate medication access, Medicare, and Medicaid—at no cost to those who need assistance. Their mission is simple but powerful: remove financial and administrative barriers so people can focus on living healthier lives.

Open, Accessible, and Free

MCAC’s services are available to anyone who is struggling, regardless of age or income level. Trained counselors work directly with clients to help them understand healthcare options, enroll in programs, and access prescription assistance.

There are no fees for these services—just guidance, advocacy, and support when it’s needed most.

Real Results That Change Lives

The impact of MCAC’s work is significant. In the past year alone, the organization served more than 1,400 clients, helping them save approximately $3.7 million in medication costs.

But beyond the numbers are deeply personal stories.

At MCAC’s recent 20th anniversary celebration, one client shared how receiving help with medications quite literally saved his life. Without MCAC’s assistance, he said, he would not have survived. Because of their help, he is still here—able to wake up each morning, drink his coffee, and watch the sunrise.

Those moments, often taken for granted, are the true measure of MCAC’s impact.

Why the Work Matters

For those who work at MCAC, the reward comes from knowing that their efforts make a real difference.

Helping someone afford medication can mean the difference between managing a condition and facing a crisis. It can mean peace of mind instead of constant worry. In some cases, it means more time—more mornings, more sunrises, more life.

A Commitment to the Community

For more than two decades, MCAC has remained committed to serving the people of Upper Michigan, quietly improving lives through compassion, expertise, and advocacy.

Their work is a reminder that healthcare access isn’t just about systems and policies—it’s about people. And sometimes, helping one person at the right moment can change everything.
